Stewed Apples with Warming Spices

A simple recipe to make stewed apples without added sugar and with hot spices.

Growing up in a Midwestern family, we went out of our way to eat breakfast on Sunday mornings. It always included stewed apples, pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, and my dad’s muffins.

Now I’m bringing back those NS-style stewed apples! I promise you this is one of the easiest recipes you will make. All you need is 3 or 4 fresh apples of your choice. I think gala, fuji and crispy honey are my favorites for stewing, but the good thing is to use what you have on hand, what is in season in your region and what tastes good to you.

You can use apple cider or water as a liquid. If you use apple cider, it will increase the sugar content, create a thicker syrup, and taste sweeter than if you use water. Both variations are delicious!
