When the hit movie “Barbie” becomes available for streaming soon, it will offer a new level of accessibility for people with disabilities.
The film will premiere on Max next week with a special option to watch it accompanied by American Sign Language interpretation.
The move is an effort to expand on the film’s theme, according to Max.

“By offering sign language interpretation, we will build on the film’s empowering message of inclusion and offer a unique viewing experience for the deaf community to enjoy with family and friends,” said Casey Bloys, president and CEO of HBO and Max, who noted that ASL is the first language for many.
The ASL version of “Barbie” shows the movie with sign language interpreter Leila Hanaumi superimposed on the bottom right corner of the screen. Max said it will be available as its own title on the streaming service indicated by key art with the sign language symbol.
To launch the ASL version of “Barbie,” Max said he will host a special screening next week in Los Angeles followed by a conversation with Hanaumi and the film’s star, Margot Robbie, in collaboration with nonprofits Deaf West Theater and RespectAbility.
“Barbie” in both the original and ASL versions will be available to stream on Max starting December 15.
