Episode #152: Understanding Diet Culture & Its Impact on Body Image

The diet culture is resurfaceing and we could not be further angry about that.

The signals are everywhere. The new drugs to lose weight that make people think that our bodies are more changing than they really are and promise in their advertising, the same shit diets have promised for generations and failed to fulfill: the myth of transformation. The former positivity champions of the body have gone to the dark side. Vogue Business informs a “worrying return to the use of extremely thin models” and an inclusion of size in the fashion industry.

There are entire industries that earn billions of dollars every year by making us feel bad for our bodies and selling “solutions” to our “problematic” bodies that never really provide sustainable long -term results. And every time we get wise and go back, they come up with something else that we must obsess to be considered worthy.

In this week’s episode THE PODCAST OF BACKGROUND IN SHAPEI sat down with FBG Alex Explore the resurgence of diet culture, its historical roots and our personal experiences with disorderly eating habits and poor body image caused by the false promises of the “thinness = health” diet culture.

We are calling the culture of the diet for what it is: a force that maintains people perpetually chasing thinness under the appearance of “health”, often at the expense of mental health, physical health and general welfare.

We have been deeply affected negatively by the culture of the diet, since two women who grew up in two different generations and two different countries, so we will not return without fighting. In this episode, we address the culture of the front diet, we expose its toxic roots and call shit in its main arguments that:

  • Combine weight loss with health
  • Make assumptions about people and their health depending on the size of your body
  • Establish certain foods or ingredients such as “good” and others like “bad”

We also call platforms like Tumblr (flashback to the “thigh gap”) and Instagram to perpetuate the toxic body standards. Social networks have become a culture broth for “unrealistic physspiration” and fear that it approaches what defines “good” or “clean” food. This influence has raided the resurgence of obsolete and thin trends, even after years of body positivity efforts.

In this episode, we also share our own personal stories along with real and edifying strategies to remodel how we see our bodies. We also emphasize the importance of support systems in the navigation of these challenges and emphasize that healing is a trip that implies recognizing and managing thoughts and feelings about body image.

Whether it is for the endless displacement of “fitspo” or tired of fighting unrealistic expectations, this episode is full of wisdom, compassion and a lot of true truth. If you are ready to challenge the noise and start rewriting your own history of your body, listen to this.

Here is why we are obsessed with this episode:

It is a raw and deeply personal conversation about the resurgence of diet culture and its disturbing impact on mental and physical health. From the social pressures linked to thinness to the toxic influence of social networks, this conversation removes the layers of a system that often equals the body image with value.

🚨 It is directed, this episode is immersed in heavy and identifiable territories such as disorderly feeding and struggles of body image. Whether you are sailing for your own healing or simply curious about the nuances of diet culture, this is powerful.
