Homemade dog treats (quick and healthy!)

We’re sharing a quick and easy homemade dog treat recipe that your pup will love! All you have to do is make the dough, cut it into the shape you prefer and bake.

Hello friends! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. This week we are back to the school routine and I started beta testing for nutrition training. I’ll be posting more details on this next week, so stay tuned!

For today, let’s talk about dog treats. I know, kind of random for a fitness blog, but my main posts are about guinea pigs, baby food, and potty training, so here we are haha.

Plus, Maisey loves these and insisted I share the word with those of you with furry friends.

I made these dog treats on a whim, using some ingredients we always have on hand. Maisey loves bits of healthy human food and let’s just say she’s into it. He loves chicken, egg, bell peppers, natural peanut butter, and watermelon. She’s also a big fan of the bully sticks from Prosperous market. She was also a big fan of these homemade dog treats! They are much better than boxed dog biscuits. Let me know if your pets try them and as always, check with your vet before changing their diet.

Ingredients for the homemade dog treats recipe:

Here are the ingredients you should have on hand for these peanut butter dog treats:

Natural peanut butter (make sure the only ingredients are peanuts and salt; no extraneous oils or sweeteners), which gives them some protein and nutty flavor.

Pumpkin puree (or even mashed sweet potato) – is a great source of fiber

Chickpea flour (you can also use whole wheat flour)

Eggs

Instant oats (I would use instant oats instead of rolled oats)

and all-purpose flour to roll the dough

and that’s it!!

You can also cut them out with a bone-shaped cookie cutter 🙂

You can always adjust the cooking time, depending on how crispy you want them to be. They can also be stored in the freezer for later.

Here’s the quick recipe for healthy dog treats – it’s super easy!

This is a quick recipe your furry friend will love! I used chickpea flour (they love chickpeas!), but feel free to use whole wheat instead.

  • Author: Gina Harney // The Fitnessista

1 cup chickpea flour (you can use whole wheat instead)

3 eggs (reserve 1 for the beaten egg)

1/4 cup pumpkin puree

1/2 cup peanut butter (check ingredients just for peanuts and salt)

1/2 cup quick cooking oats

All-purpose flour for rolling

Choice Cookie Cutters

Preheat oven to 325 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, combine two of the eggs, peanut butter, pumpkin, chickpea flour (or wheat flour), and oats. Stir until a dough forms. Add more chickpea flour or a little all-purpose flour to the dough if necessary.

Sprinkle a little all-purpose flour on a clean surface and add the dough. It will be a little sticky, so use flour to coat the outside of the dough as you roll it until it is about 1/2 inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes and gently place them on the baking sheet.

Combine remaining dough, roll and repeat.

Make the egg wash by whisking the remaining egg and 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl. Use a pastry brush to paint the beaten egg on the top of each dog treat.

Place in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes, until hard. Let cool completely before storing at room temperature or in the refrigerator in a sealed container.

Have you ever tried a homemade dog biscuit recipe? What is the food that always drives your dog crazy? I never eat chicken without thinking about Bella.
