There’s no place like home

W.Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to feel the comfort and security of home, as if we were relaxing on the couch, no matter where we are or what we are doing? Have you ever thought about that? Let’s talk.

After all, how can I take the comfort and security of home with me (and use it to calm myself) if it has no meaning?

“No matter how humble it may be, there is no place like home.”

And especially applicable to this piece: “Home is where the heart is.”

Introduction

If we go back 50 years, when my journey with emotional and mental illness began, I couldn’t understand it.

I mean, I would feel comfortable and safe being in the house, but the moment I stepped foot outside the door, all the panic and anxiety would break out.

Of course, it didn’t take long to put two and two together. But that didn’t mean he had escaped Hades.

So I decided to go with reason, believing that my hair-on-fire version was the exception and comfortable, safe at-home editing was the rule.

The goal then was to take the comfort and security of home with me when I ventured out.

“There is no place like home”

“There’s no place like home.” is most often attributed to the 1823 song “Home, Sweet Home”, written by John Payne and Sir Henry Bishop.

A pretty sweet opening…

‘In the midst of pleasures and palaces
Although we may wander,
Always be so humble,
There is no place like home.

The language was actually widely used in England years before the song was written. Here is an example from the September 1781 edition of the English newspaper. The bathroom chronicle

But this ultimate mind –
There’s no place like home
For security you will find

A little history never hurts anyone, right?

A “warm furry”?

So “there’s no place like home.” – Is it “warm fluff” for you or does it touch your heart and soul? By nature. It’s the last thing for me. And it really has to be that way.

After all, how can I take the comfort and security of home with me (and use it to calm myself) if it has no meaning?

Now it’s your turn

The mobile “house”

But what about you? Can you subscribe to this “There’s No Place Like Home” app? Is it at least possible that you can feel the comfort and security of “home” no matter where you are or what you are doing?

And what impact would it have on your emotional and mental state?

Of course, embracing the power of the concept is the first order of business. Then you have to put it into practice, which requires self-examination, gaining insight into suspicious patterns of thinking and beliefs, and a lot of practice.

a poem

Years ago, while trying to connect too many dots, I wrote this poem. You may find it meaningful…

Ourselves

After all
What can we be but ourselves?
When everything is torn down
And there’s nothing left but who we really are
Stripped to the bone
exposed to everyone

There’s nowhere left to hide
There is no shelter from the storm
Without shoring scaffolding
There is no detour to divert the truth.
Just a direct look inside
With a frightened blink

But on unstable ground
Shaky legs gain strength
With firmness and blind energy forward.
In tatters among the rubble
We get to know ourselves
and become whole

In a chance of your life

Learn to look inside

“There’s no place like home.” The idiom, the concept, that can generate infinite feelings of comfort and security when we venture out. That is, if we are willing to accept and develop it.

Do you live in a world that you yourself perceive as high risk? If so, overcoming fear is likely a priority. Learn to look within for your coping techniques. What better – and more lasting – source of comfort and security?
