CommonSpirit Forms Alliance With University of Utah Health

Catholic health system CommonSpirit Health and University of Utah Health have announced a “strategic clinical alliance” under which patients at the five CommonSpirit hospitals in Utah will have access to University of Utah Health physicians and providers.

As a community partner, CommonSpirit said it would expand University of Utah Health’s capacity to provide care to more people along the Wasatch Front.

CommonSpirit purchased the following hospitals from Steward Health Care in 2023:

CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital – Davis
CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley
CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital – West Jordan Valley
CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital – Mountain Point
CommonSpirit Hospital of the Holy Cross – Salt Lake

With more than 26,000 faculty and staff, University of Utah Health is the only academic health care system in the state of Utah, serving patients across Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and much of Nevada. CommonSpirit has care centers in 24 states and five operating regions (its Mountain Region spans Utah, Colorado and Kansas) and employs more than 1,000 physicians and other providers as part of its team of approximately 16,000 employees.

“At CommonSpirit, our mission calls us to tirelessly innovate so we can provide the highest level of compassionate care to all people, including the most vulnerable,” Andrew Gaasch, CommonSpirit Mountain Region president, said in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming University of Utah health providers to our hospitals and working alongside them as we improve population health and build a path to more accessible care along the Wasatch Front and beyond.”

“We keep the patient at the center of everything we do and are proud to partner with CommonSpirit’s exceptional teams and hospitals to expand access to people in our communities and region,” said Michael L. Good, MD, CEO of University of Utah Health and Senior Vice President of Health Sciences, in a statement. “By working together, we will do what we are all trained to do in healthcare: improve health and quality of life. We are proud to join CommonSpirit providers and staff in that shared purpose. “CommonSpirit’s commitment to compassionate care is inspiring and we look forward to collaborating with such a dedicated organization.”

CommonSpirit said it has invested more than $100 million in its facilities and caregivers in Utah over the past 18 months.
