The Empulse R90 is a new long-range power assist option from Sunrise Medical that mounts under rigid and folding wheelchairs. You control the device with a push-button control box that connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and attaches to the frame of your wheelchair. There is currently no option for a wired controller, which may be a concern for those concerned about Bluetooth controller security.
A unique feature of the Empulse R90 compared to other power underchair assistants like the Permobil SmartDrive or SMOOV is that you have the option to raise the drive wheel to reduce resistance when pushing manually. Additionally, the Empulse R90 has removable batteries rated at 2.5 amp-hours or 5 amp-hours, so you can purchase an extra battery to swap out for extra range. The smaller battery has a range of 9.8 miles and is approved for air travel. The larger battery has a range of 19.5 miles but is not approved for air travel.
You can customize device settings with the Sunrise Intelligence app, which allows you to create custom profiles for different environments, set maximum speeds, monitor battery usage, and track performance statistics.
“All of these features make the R90 easy to use, but the highlight is its versatility,” said Bernd Krebs, CTO of Sunrise Medical. “We did extensive field testing and our drivers enjoyed the great maneuverability, compactness and reach, as well as the wheel lift feature.”
The Empulse R90 starts at $7,300. For more information, visit Medical Dawn.
