Last weekend I hosted a group of friends at our family home on Bald Head Island. Here’s the rundown!
Old bald man
Last weekend, five friends and I spent a long weekend on Bald Head Island. This was my first time traveling with a group from Charleston, and we had a blast! The downside was that we barely saw any sun, so our time on the beach was minimal, but we made up for it with lots of relaxing time at home and playing lots of games. Thomas stayed home with the kids because he’s getting ready for a big golf trip with friends to Charleston in October. I hope he has better weather than we did.
Thursday
We arrived on the 3pm ferry on Thursday. This was everyone’s first visit to BHI so it was fun to show them the ropes and the main sights.
After arriving and unpacking, we headed to the Sea Market to buy groceries and pick up our family meal for the evening. Plus a nice cold Savvy B beer!
Shrimp + Grits
Maritime Market’s family meals are perfect for late nights when you just want to relax. The shrimp and grits are great!
Visit to the beach
After dinner we headed straight to the beach knowing it might be our only day without rain.
Tattoos!
Check out my semi-temporary tattoos! A lot of my friends have tattoos, so I bought a few of these to try out. The island is close Ink box and the butterflies are near Ink art linkI really want to try it InkBox pen But I was worried that the tip wouldn’t be thin enough. Has anyone tried it? These stay in place for 1-2 weeks! The one on my wrist is almost gone from rubbing and hand washing, but the ones on my ankles look amazing a week later!
One of these is real. Can you guess which one it is? The one on top or the one on the bottom? Since I had full sheets of paper, we put them all on.
Game night
We went back to the house to play and have ice cream.
Friday
On Friday we woke up to rain and started with a big breakfast prepared by our morning cook, Chef Aaron. Eggs, bacon, bagels, and coffee. We loved spending the mornings sitting around the big table playing the New York Times games: Wordle, Connections, The Mini.
Climb the lighthouse!
By mid-morning the sun had partially risen, so we decided to climb Old Baldy.
Old Bald Man and Old Bald Man!!!
Oh, the jokes Aaron and I made.
It is not that difficult to climb the 108 steps.
Views of the swamp: what a wonder!
Walk on the beach
But did you notice the sky? THE SUN IS OUT! Since rain was forecast for the entire day, we were very excited to head to the beach. We were dressed for walking, so we walked 30 minutes along South Beach before heading back for lunch.
15 minutes of sun
After eating sandwiches at home, we packed everything into the golf carts, put on $50 worth of sunscreen, and headed to the beach. All set!
And 15 minutes after we sat down, it started to rain (the hourly forecast said we had more time).
Half of our group left when it started to rain and Julie, Sean and I huddled under the umbrella hoping the rain would go away. After about 30 minutes of this, we gave up and packed up in the rain.
But as soon as we got back on the golf cart, this happened!
We debated what to do and tried to go to the beach once more and immediately it started raining again. Not our lucky day!
And that was the end of the beach for days. The rain continued to be heavy and constant, and we were lucky to get off the island on Sunday because on Monday the area was under a major flood watch and the roads were being washed out. The situation there was a bit scary.
Night out
After showering and reading on the porch, we went to Jail For dinner!
Jules for karaoke
Once we were full of seafood, the next stop was July‘for karaoke!
The bar was packed and karaoke was so much fun!
Sean and I sang “Hooked On A Feeling,” the group sang “Country Roads,” and Aaron sang a Luke Bryan classic: “Country Girl Shake It For Me!”
Saturday
Saturday was our last day and we had the heaviest rain. Aaron made waffles!
Shopping around
We went out mid-morning to go shopping at the Maritime. People bought sweatshirts and caps.
Twinning!
Lunch plate with sardine salad
Pumpkin beer tasting in the afternoon
Burritos for dinner
For dinner, Chef Sean seared chicken and cooked peppers for a burrito buffet!
Movie night
We observe Where the crabs sing It was the perfect swamp movie! Everyone loved it.
Next time we’ll be back for the sun!
The Ferry
…I was pretty soaked! But we made it back.
Hillsborough Route
Our car stopped by Hillsborough on the way home so we could see Mom’s new art show, all about the Beatles! Each painting is inspired by a Beatles song. You can see and buy her works here. hereIf you have a Beatles fan in your life, one of these would make a great gift.
