Overview
Exposure to adversity during childhood and adolescence, including discrimination, socioeconomic disadvantage, and neighborhood risk factors, can increase the risk of developing mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. However, many people who experience adversity show resilience and do not develop mental illness. Understanding the factors that promote resilience can help guide the design of new prevention measures and interventions. Presenters will discuss risk factors that people of Mexican origin may face, including discrimination and acculturation stress. They will also discuss research examining how factors such as familism, ethnic pride, and temperament may help promote resilience among people of Mexican origin.
