The bad news: Drug shortages in 2023 were the highest since 2012.
These findings come from a FDA Report to CongressIt is worth noting that the shortage of biologic drugs (regulated by CBER) increased significantly in 2023. The FDA writes that:
The 2023 calendar year has been a challenging year due to shortages. For example, the notable increase in new shortages of CBER-regulated biologics was due to manufacturing and quality procedure issues at a manufacturer that experienced global supply chain issues related to a lack of some materials and components needed to the manufacturing process. The FDA has noted that manufacturers in the United States and abroad continue to experience quality problems and struggle with capacity limitations.
