The Historic Inn at Oakdene • Kath Eats

Looking for a getaway in Staunton, Virginia? The Historic Inn at Oakdene is the perfect place for a romantic getaway!

Escape

My parents came to visit last week and offered to watch the kids while Thomas and I went on a little getaway. We had Staunton in mind and booked a stay at the Historic Inn in Oakdene. Oakdene was recently renovated by my friend Jamie’s short term rental company. Quiet getaways, who was the host of our stay. If you are looking for a place to stay in the Charlottesville/Waynesboro/Afton/Staunton metro area, they have many charming properties, from inns to entire homes. Oakdene is one of the newest! Here is a summary of our stay.

Trip to Staunton

We left Charlottesville at noon on Saturday and arrived in Staunton and arrived easily 40 minutes later. While I went to Staunton for a yoga class a few weeks ago, I haven’t been to a real visit since I was 38 weeks pregnant with Mazen! It is a charming and quiet city. Thomas went on to comment on how quiet he felt compared to the “hustle and bustle of Cville” (which I know will make city dwellers laugh).

The Historic Oakdene Inn

We arrived to oakdene and we checked into our room. The inn was built for the former lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1893. His Queen Anne style was spectacular in the best way, especially at night!

The grounds and gardens were so beautiful. They reminded me of my grandmother’s house!

Queen Anne Style

The interior, although historic, was also totally modern for comfortable accommodation. Oakdene has no innkeeper and rooms are accessed with codes. There are 8 suites, all with beautiful bedding and private bathrooms. Look at the shower in the governor’s suite! And there are really lovely common areas, including a grand piano, a coffee and snack lounge, and a billiards room! We talked about how fun it would be to come and stay with some other couples.

Stocked ice cream fridge!

The Queen Anne Suite

Our room was right off the main hallway and was very nice and spacious. We were both obsessed with Earth Cozy Bedding and we might have to get some for our house.

Game time

After settling into our room and changing for dinner, we headed out to the porch to enjoy happy hour and a round of Rummikub!

We didn’t realize how close we were to downtown until we mapped it – we could walk! I love a walkable place, and it was pretty too.

Once we reached downtown Staunton, we entered Zinodoa for drinks before our 7pm dinner reservation

A nice old style for me!

Once it was time for our reservation, we moved to the outside patio. I love that Staunton has its own version of a downtown shopping center with lots of outdoor seating and no traffic. We shared a Caesar salad to start along with a warm, salty baguette.

Our dinner was VERY good. Normally we both gravitate towards seafood, but we ended up eating beef and pork. Zynodoa offers local meats. My beef was from Burner’s Beef in Luray, VA and Thomas’ pork was from Autumn Olive Farm in Waynesboro.

Those grits were the best part of our meal! We also had two really good red wines to pair with it.

We headed back to Oakdene to enjoy ice cream and the Outlander season 7 finale!

Coffee stuff:

Breakfast

After coffee, we walked back downtown and went to The by&by for bagel sandwiches. It’s funny that once we sat on this patio, I recognized it from my trip almost 12 years ago where we had had a few drinks.

10/10 breakfast muffin! Sausage, egg and cheese.

I highly recommend Oakdene and Staunton for a quiet getaway! We would definitely return. If you are interested, you can book here!
