Well, it’s about time! The nation’s first FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pill is now available at some retailers nationwide.
That means you can go in and buy Opill, a progestin-only birth control pill, without a prescription. The FDA approved Opill in July 2023. It now appears in major pharmacies and supermarkets, including Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart.

How is Opill taken?
You should take a pill at the same time every day. Note: Opill does not start working until two days after taking the first pill. To prevent pregnancy during this time, use another form of barrier contraceptive methodsuch as a condom, spermicide, cervical cap, or diaphragm.
Do you need health insurance to buy Opill?
No. You can walk into any store that has Opill and buy it without insurance. And no one will ask you for your insurance information.
Who should not take Opill?
You should not take Opill if:
- You have breast cancer or have had breast cancer in the past
- You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
- You are taking birth control pills or using another method of birth control, including a vaginal ring, patch, implant, injection, or IUD.
Also, if you are taking medications for seizures, tuberculosis, HIV or AIDS, or pulmonary hypertension, talk to your healthcare provider (HCP) or pharmacist before taking Opill. Medications for these health conditions can interact with the pill and make it less effective. Opill may also interact with the morning after pill.
How much does Opill cost?
