The BRAIN Initiative® Cell Atlas Workshop: From Single-Cell Genomics to Brain Function and Disorders—Data Integration and Annotation

Date and Time

January 16-18, 2024
11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time

General description

To date, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has generated a large amount of single-cell genomic profiling data (>100 million cells) from human and other mammalian brains. Brain Research through the Advancement of Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative – Cell Census Network (BICCN) and the Atlas Cellular Network (BICAN) and the broader research community to characterize brain cell types and states across life and disease. This information-rich data represents a tremendous advance in research, creating essential new opportunities for data analysis, integration, and annotation.

This workshop will be a 3-day interactive event with specific and coordinated presentations, panel discussions and demonstrations with the following objectives:

  1. Foster the development of data standards for the integration and annotation of single-cell genomic data.
  2. Systematize and automate the process of converting data to information and knowledge and develop channels when possible.
  3. Provide new insights into functional studies of brain cells using cell atlas data and cell type-specific targeting tools.
  4. Develop strategies with brain disease research communities to make the most of BICCN/BICAN data.
  5. Develop a community roadmap for single-cell data analysis and annotation.

The overall goal of the BRAIN Initiative Cell Atlas Program is to create reference brain cell atlases that will be widely used throughout the research community, providing a fundamental molecular and anatomical framework for the study of brain function and disease. .
