A closet system is one of those things you don’t think you’ll need until you’re looking at a small white room with four walls! And then where do you start? The ideal closet has different types of storage space, from hanging clothes (short and long!), drawers, shelves, and shoes. The more you can adapt the spaces to your needs, the more personalized your closet will seem.

My previous EasyCloset

My closet before the renovation was also Easy closets. My real estate agent recommended EasyClosets to me in 2015, I ordered my system from them and paid a handyman to install it. I was very happy with the previous version and wanted to use the company again because I already knew the quality and installation process. I really maximized my little corner of that space. We reused the drawers and shelves from Thomas’ new closet, since he needs a lot less clothes than I do. 😉

Our new cabinets

In our new master bedroom, bigger closets were on the wish list, and we got bigger closets! Mine is huge and has room to grow (as planned!). A compromise to getting the larger of the two was to have the door to our storage room (the old roof deck door) be in the middle of my closet wall. But it lets in more light (that’s why we chose a glass panel), so I’m not mad about it!

During the renovation!

Here’s the story of my experience with EasyClosets from start to finish, including designing with a sloped ceiling and Thomas’ overnight installation!

EasyClosets Review

easy closets offers a great balance between a high-end custom closet and a DIY experience. It’s exactly what consumers need: a product that has a custom design but is easy to install yourself. EasyClosets pieces are made to order at their headquarters in Michigan, meaning their pieces are designed for you rather than being a one-size-fits-all modular design. If you have ever assembled furniture, you know how important it is for pieces to be pre-drilled and cut to they really fit.

The parts are shipped to you to install, saving you a lot of money on installation by being easy for the average person to use. They offer a variety of cabinet combinations and styles, so you can customize your space however you want: more shelves, more pendants, more drawers, or a little of each.

Design process

One of the best perks of the company is the free design service! I started designing something myself using their online design program to get a rough price range and quickly realized I had no talent in the space department. I wasn’t 100% sure entering my measurements into the design tool and definitely didn’t want to design a closet that didn’t fit our space, so I contacted their team for a free design.

In my application, I explained that I wanted “lots of drawers, half- and full-length hanging space, and plenty of shoe storage.” (Everyone knows I love my drawers for do not fold clothes!) I received a response from Zack, who was able to enter measurements and create not one but two different custom design options for me that same day. Zack and I made some adjustments and I was able to log in and see the designs in 2D and 3D. It was very interesting.

Design Finishes

Once I had all of my clothing categories in mind, I chose finishes like black hardware (to match the rest of our home) and some accessories, like a jewelry drawer and valet stand. See all the options here!

And here is the same piece in real life!

EasyClosets Pricing

You can use the EasyClosets design tool to enter your dimensions and add a few storage pieces to get an instant quote for the size closet you need. My closet is large, and while I didn’t need to fill every inch, I knew I wanted to maximize the space while I could instead of building it in stages. My entire wardrobe cost about $5,000, including taxes.

EasyClosets is said to cost about 40% less compared to other closet companies like California Closets because they offer a factory-direct DIY solution. I didn’t get any other quotes, but Thomas told me local companies would cost over $10K.

EasyClosets always offers free shipping on orders over $400, which is great because freight shipping can be a beast with some online deliveries. They also have payment plan options.

Customer Service + Delivery

Customer service is available six days a week during extended hours in case you need to contact them with an installation or delivery question. EasyClosets products include a limited lifetime warranty. Fun fact: the core of most EasyClosets panels is made from 100% recycled and/or reused wood fiber.

I had a great experience working with Zack and the team. The order and delivery emails told me that it would take about 3 weeks to arrive at my house. The hardware boxes arrived via UPS fairly quickly and the freight truck called me ahead of time to schedule the larger delivery. I was able to choose the date we wanted and that worked well with our renewal schedule.

Install

Luckily, I’m married to a man who set up my closet for a series of nights while the kids and I were in North Carolina. Thomas and I FaceTime every night to check on progress. I loved seeing it come to life!

Although sometimes tedious, the installation went smoothly. Check out Thomas’ tips below. I finished the last few steps when I got home and installed the hanging rods, shelves, and valet bar because Thomas didn’t know exactly where he wanted them. Those parts were definitely so easy even I could do them!

Thomas’ EasyClosets Installation Tips

1. Study the installation and watch the videos.

No, really, do it! There’s a complete installation guide on the website which I would definitely recommend studying first. There are also many videos. I’m such a visual person that watching someone else do it is much easier than trying to interpret just the text. (Though you also get an entire book customized for your exact closet!)

2. Organize the pieces before starting.

The team recommended that we account for all the parts before beginning the installation in case anything was missing. Thomas also found it helpful to unpack and organize everything first instead of unpacking one box at a time. That made it faster.

3. Prepare to recycle a lot of cardboard

Have a box cutter and make room in your trunk to take the boxes to the appropriate recycling center. It was a lot and it wouldn’t have fit in the recycling bin at our house. Or better yet, find someone who is moving and can use them!

4. Request a spreadsheet

Thomas contacted customer service for a parts list spreadsheet that he found helpful for the installation. There were many pieces and this sheet helped him organize them. I recommend ordering it in advance.

5. Two people can be useful

As Thomas installed the cabinet himself, he said it would have been nice to have an extra set of hands to get the vertical panels into place. For his information, there are two of them!

6. Tools you will need

You will need a stud finder, a cordless drill, a level, and a tape measure. Thomas also recommends a rubber mallet and a ladder. Also good music!

7. Use an assembly line method for drawers.

Instead of assembling one drawer at a time on the floor, Thomas used a waist-high workstation and built drawers on an assembly line. Easier on the back!

My closet tour!

Everything in my closet feels high quality. I love the black hardware, the abundance of drawers, the space for clothes to breathe, and the design I chose. Also, I added some personal items to make it very KERF. 🙂 Watch the video tour on YouTube here!

Long dress area

It’s SO NICE to have all my clothes in one space instead of previously having out-of-season clothes in a dresser and long dresses in Thomas’ closet because my closet 1.0 didn’t have any space for long dresses.

Zones

Now I have areas for summer blouses, winter blouses, long dresses and outerwear. The drawers store my casual/everyday/athleisure clothes. I have plenty of room to grow in the back, where I store my boots, soccer gear, and other less-used things.

jewelry drawer

The jewelry drawer was something Zack put into his design. I LOVE having my jewelry organized! (Don’t steal from me, nothing is real!)

valet wand

How cool is this removable valet bar for outfit planning? Since I rarely need to pull out fancy clothes, I wear it most often as an everyday robe. There is also a slide-out belt/necklace/tie organizer.

Shoe shelves

I spaced these shelves out for the shoes and love having them visible instead of throwing them in a basket or stacking them on top of each other.

Two oversights on my part

1. I can barely see in the top drawers

One small hiccup that I didn’t realize until the cabinet was all built and ready was the height of the taller drawers. At 5’2″, I can barely see inside! I didn’t even think about measuring the height. However, I don’t regret this because it maximizes space. So instead of having the jewelry drawer on top, it’s in the middle. This means I can see the jewelry much better.

2. I didn’t plan a laundry area!

I have a laundry basket and I didn’t plan to put it inside the door. But I put it in one of my clothes hanging spaces and it works fine.

I also added some personal touches from my childhood:
